WILDLIFE HOSPITAL AND RESCUE CENTRE

Wildlife hospital and rescue center within zoos play a crucial role in the care, rehabilitation, and conservation of injured, sick, or orphaned animals.

SOP ON ROUTINE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN AT WILDLIFE HOSPITAL
  1. Feed quality checking - Fruits, vegetables, grains, beef, chicken, mutton and chicks should be inspected by authorized Veterinarian i.e. Assistant Director (Vet.) on daily basis and if any poor quality feed should be rejected.
  2. Distribution of regular medication, feed additives and supplements - As a part of health care Veterinary Team should distribute prophylactic medication i.e. B-Complex, Mineral Mixture and Multivitamin should given to all animals by adding in the feed and water as per health protocol.
  3. Analysis of faecal samples - Schedule has been given to the Lab Technician to collect all faecal samples with area wise to know parasitic load in the faecal samples for effective deworming and health care and samples should be sent to the Veterinary Institutes i.e. TSVBRI, Shantinagar, Hyderabad for laboratory diagnosis and confirmation.
  4. Monitoring the health status of animals - Assistant Director (Vet.) is in-charge of the Zoo Vety. Hospital will monitor the health status of all wild animals and birds in the Zoo by taking morning rounds and inspecting all enclosures by Veterinary Team including Vety. Asst. Surgeon, Jr. Vety. Officer and Veterinary Assistant.

  6. Treatment of sick animals - The treatment will be carried out by the wild animals based on symptoms, gait and other abnormalities. If necessary samples will be collected by physical restraining of animals or immobilization of the animal with prior intimation to the Forest Officials and samples will be sent to the laboratories for disease and health status. For each sick animal or bird separate treatment register and case sheet will be maintained.
  7. Quarantine of outside animals which are brought to the Zoo - All animals and birds brought from outside will be quarantine a minimum period of ten days for birds and fifteen days for Reptiles and thirty days for Mammals. After completion of the quarantine period if the condition of the animal is good then they will be shifted into the respective enclosures or translocation to the wild with permission of the Chief Wildlife Warden, Telangana.
  8. Conservation breeding - We have two conservation breeding centers which are sponsored by Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi.
     1. Vulture Breeding Center.
     2. Mouse Deer Breeding Center.
    The above breeding centers will be monitored by Biologist, Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad and health care by the Zoo Veterinarians and rehabilitation and translocation will be done by Forest Department, Telangana.
  9. Hand rearing of young one - hand rearing of orphaned and rescued cubs, fawns, puppies and chicks will be undertaken by Veterinary wing assisted by Biologist, Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad in Cub Rearing Center.
  10. Impart training to the Departmental Officers - Zoo Veterinarians impart training to Forest Departmental Officers, Veterinary Graduates and Post Graduates as part of academic curriculum in wild animals health care, feed activities and rescue operations.
  11. Maintenance of Zoo animal records - Animal records will be maintained by the Zoo Veterinarians, Biologists and Data Processing Officer, Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad with the help of Jr. Vety. Officer and Veterinary Assistant and monitor by Assistant Director (Vet.).

SOP ON SEASONAL ARRANGEMENTS AT NEHRU ZOOLOGICAL PARK, HYDERABAD

Summer measures undertaken in wild animals and birds at Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad

  1. Arranged sprinklers and small rain guns in all enclosures particularly in Herbivores.
  2. Arranged Foggers in the Reptile House, New Macaws, all Pheasantry and Aviary area in Zoo Park. Also arranged thunga on roof of enclosure night houses atleast 6 inches breadth.
  3. Provided shade net in the Duck Pond and Stork Pond area.
  4. Arranged Coolers in all monkey area and Carnivore enclosures.
  5. Arranged Air Condition and Exhaust Fans in the Nocturnal Animal House.
  6. Temporary shady shelters provided to all Herbivore enclosures.
  7. Provided seasonal fruits like Water Melon, Musk Melon and Citrus Variety Fruits provided to all Apes, Monkeys, Primates, Birds and Bears.
  8. Provided ample of protected cold water to all animal houses time to time to avoid De-hydration.
  9. Provided Glucon-D, Electral Powder, Vitamin-C supplements, B-Complex supplements, Stresswell and Thermo Care Liquid in the water to avoid summer stress (Veterinary Section).
  10. Kashkash Thattis provided to all Animal House enclosures to avoid direct sunlight exposure on the animals.
  11. Atleast 3 to 4 times watering was done on the Kashkash thattis and thunga to avoid summer stress.
  12. Thunga provided on the top of all animal houses to avoid summer stress including aviaries and Macaws area with atleast 4 inches breadth.
  13. All Animal Keepers, Head Animal Keepers, Park Supervisor has taken preventive steps time to time to avoid summer stress to the wild animals, Birds and Reptiles etc.
